The GLC SX MM is a Cisco brand SFP (Small Form Factor Pluggable Transceiver) also known as a mini-GBIC. There primary function is to interface with a networking cable and increase the connectivity between two network devices (mother board, router, media converter etc…)

SFP’s in general have different transmitter and receiver types that allow the consumer to select the best option for their situation. The GLC SX MM is designed to operate with multi-mode fiber. Essentially multi-mode fiber optic cable is designed to communicate short distances (up to 550 meters) but can still carry data rates up to 10 Gbits/s.

This particular SFP is designed by Cisco but can be used to work with anyone that builds SFP ports. (HP, Finisar, Juniper among many others.) These also use an LC type connector (again, higher density for higher quantities between two devices). If snapped into 62.5 micron fiber cable the connection is good for 902ft. -  50 micron fibre goes to 1804ft. This is all to say that you’re typically only going to use the GLC SX MM on campuses and internal networks.

If you’re looking to upgrade your network and the distance is less than 1800 ft. Then the Cisco Equivalent GLC SX MM may be your best bet.
